VCU School of Dentistry offers four Master of Science in Dentistry degrees and six certificates of advanced dental education programs, including General Dentistry, Endodontics (M.S.D.), Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (M.D. optional), Orthodontics (M.S.D.), Pediatric Dentistry (M.S.D.), and Periodontics (M.S.D.). All programs are accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association.
Those enrolled in the advanced education programs are full-time students, considered to be the equivalent of full-time resident trainees. Under special circumstances, trainees may be accepted into some programs on a part-time basis.
Students enrolling in endodontics, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry and periodontics also are awarded a Master of Science in Dentistry upon completion of the coursework and clinical requirements for the certificate and successful defense of a thesis. The certificate program and Master of Science in Dentistry must be completed concurrently. Satisfactory completion of the program leads to the award of a certificate of training and certifies eligibility for examination by the appropriate specialty board.
